Christian Ali, an author with Arthrogryposis Multiplex, shares his story of finding flexible, client-centered support through CPSN, enabling him to pursue his goals and live an empowered, inclusive life.
An Inclusive approach to Support
“When I first reached out to the Cerebral Palsy Support Network, one of the first things I asked my Mum was, does it actually matter that I don’t have Cerebral Palsy? It’s very similar symptoms, it’s a very similar condition, “They don’t worry about that, so we shouldn’t either.”
Christian Ali has Arthrogryposis Multiplex, a disability that affects his muscles, making them smaller than normal, or non-existent. But this doesn’t affect his enthusiasm for life or achieving a goal.
Personalised Support, Flexibility & Choice Makes a Difference
Cheryl, Christian’s Mum, said that what stood out to them about CPSN as a service provider was that they were ready to assist where possible, giving the family flexibility to be able to interview their own carers, and they reassured them that they choose who enters the safe space of their home, and decisions about various things are made by them only, and not made by CPSN for them.
Christian’s Support Worker, Julie Bright, is impressed with what she has seen so far from CPSN as a boutique disability service provider to not only Christian and his family, but herself.
“It’s not just an agency, [The Cerebral Palsy Support Network] it really seems like people know what’s going on, what’s needed. They listen; they care.”
Christian’s Creative Achievement
Christian is a published author of a book titled “Made with Love,” where poetry and science intertwine about where babies come from. The idea was born after he watched the film Inside Out. It was a family affair, with Christian’s uncle, Stephen serving as illustrator. It was possible to see this publishing come to fruition, thanks in part to some NDIS funding.
“Giving people carers, alleviating their stresses, and being part of an extended network that helps the disabled community” [like CPSN] has been integral in aiding Christian to live his best life, and helping raise awareness that clients like him are working through their own physical barriers independently.
“We never settle for second best. If it’s good enough for somebody who is able bodied, then it is good enough for all of us too,” Christian says.
CPSN is here as a solid community support, doing good for others and helping to ensure that the world is slowly becoming a more inclusive place.
