Meet Jessica
Tell us about yourself?
Such a simple question, yet oddly enough a simple answer doesn’t come to mind. Am I over-thinking it? Yes. Well you can blame the writing course I did… Oh, come on! Stop placing blame and just answer the question!
I’m Jess. A twenty-three-year-old chatterbox who can sometimes be a little vivacious. I love a good laugh and spending time with those who I hold close. Oh, and I should also mention that I have spastic cerebral palsy, but who said that was important?
What are your interests?
How do I put this without sounding completely dull? Nobody wants to hear about my unhealthy obsession with stationery, my nerdy quiz about NCIS or my blogs about other TV series…
Now down to the slightly more interesting side of things. One of my main interests is the film and television industry. I sometimes get far too caught up in minor details that the average person is likely to skip over. To fulfil this interest, over this past year I had been at RMIT in the city studying a Diploma of Screen and Media.
Apart from the film and TV industry, I also really enjoy music. Although I do listen to many different artists, the talents of British bands Coldplay and London Grammar have always been a favourite. I have been fortunate enough to see both these amazing bands perform live on stage.
What is your greatest achievement, or the thing you are most proud of about yourself?
Okay, look I’m going to be honest here. If you asked me this same question in-person, I’d probably give the shy answer. ‘I don’t know’. Not only is this a cop-out but it’s also incredibly boring. No, in all seriousness I often struggle to recognise my achievements. Especially when I sometimes feel like I don’t deserve them… but you asked for it, so here goes nothing.
As part of my course, during the second semester I produced, wrote, directed and edited my first short film, Concession. The five-minute film is about two mates who plan to enjoy a night out at a music concert. However, that idea is soon turned on its head when the woman at the ticket office refuses to give the two men venue access without some formal evidence. Shouldn’t the fact that one of the men is in a wheelchair be enough proof? The whole filmmaking process was tough to say the least. However, after months of preparation and what was a rocky start to the shoot, I must admit I’m a little proud of the final result. If you enjoy a bit of black comedy, feel free to visit the following link: https://vimeo.com/240780453. The password is: CONCESSION.JM.
What is the most important thing people should know about you?
What a hard question! I guess I’d like people to know that I really aspire to help others in whichever way I can. One day I hope to make some kind of positive impact on the world. Whether that be something minor or something significant is irrelevant.
Oh, and despite my disability, I’d like to be treated like any other twenty-three-year-olds inhabiting this planet, embarking on this wonderful journey we call life.
